Navigation GPS Buying Guide
Whether you're on foot or in your car, GPS units can get you where you need to go. Before buying a Navigation GPS unit there are a few simple facts you should know.
Navigation GPS units are a handy tool for getting to your destination quickly. This technology has given people more freedom to get where they need to go. Just get in your car, punch in the destination and the system will plot the course for you. You then get turn by turn directions to your destination. But there are a few things to consider before deciding what GPS unit to buy. First consider what kind of traveling you will be doing. Built in units are good if most of your traveling is in one car. However if you often fly from city to city and use rental cars, then you may want to consider buying a portable unit that can go where ever you go. Entry level portable units start at around a hundred dollars so it an affordable way to get around in unfamiliar territory. There are also mobile GPS applications that you can download for your mobile device like a cell phone or an iPod. These are barebones applications and don't offer all the features you find in full fledged GPS unit. They are good for people who only need directions occasionally, and they're convenient because you don't have to buy new hardware. Although the technology that makes it work is very complicated, the concept of GPS is pretty straight forward. You put in your destination and it gives you directions. Because of this many GPS units offer extra features like mp3 players, Bluetooth capability some even have FM radios. These bells and whistles are nice but make the units more expensive. The really useful stuff comes in the form of real time traffic information and point of interest locators. The best GPS units will help you not only get to your destination, but get there quickly and safely. And once you are there, you can find other locations close-by like restaurants and gas stations. Another handy feature to look for is the spoken direction given by some units. These units actually talk you through each turn so you can keep your eyes on the road. Others still, offer what is called "lane assist." This feature actually tells when it is best to change lanes. This way you don't miss your exit on the freeway because you were in the wrong lane. So to round up if you use different cars, get the best portable unit you can buy. If you travel mostly in the same car, an in-dash system is probably the way to go. For the casual user, mobile apps are great. If you are still having trouble deciding what model best suits you, consult our Navigation GPS site for a comprehensive list and side-by-side comparison of the best units on the market. So whether you're going a mile up the road, exploring an exotic city or venturing into the wild there's a GPS unit that fits your need.
